Est\u00e1 mediado por peque\u00f1os fragmentos de RNA de doble cadena llamados <strong>siRNAs<\/strong> que juegan un <strong>papel clave en la regulaci\u00f3n de los genes<\/strong> durante el desarrollo y en la respuesta inmune frente a las infecciones virales.<\/p>\n<p>Gracias a la biotecnolog\u00eda es posible aprovechar este proceso celular para dise\u00f1ar de forma dirigida terapias espec\u00edficas basadas en el RNAi.<\/p>\n<p>Algunas enfermedades est\u00e1n causadas por un mal funcionamiento de las prote\u00ednas o bien por una producci\u00f3n excesiva de las mismas. El uso de f\u00e1rmacos basados en el RNAi permite disminuir o controlar de manera espec\u00edfica la producci\u00f3n de aquellas que est\u00e1n involucradas en una patolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>En 2006 el Premio Nobel de Fisiolog\u00eda o Medicina fue concedido de forma conjunta a Andrew Z. Fire y Craig C. Mello por su descubrimiento del RNAi mediado por siRNAs.
